Status changed: RumortoDebunked
An insider claimed that boxed copies of GTA VI would not go on sale on the same day as the digital version, supposedly to stop the game leaking early. The claim came from Graczdari, who writes for the Polish site PPE.pl and was relayed by Dexerto. Outlets credit the insider with a good record, including an accurate call on the release of Oblivion Remastered.
The insider was not sure how long the wait would be. According to PCGamesN, PPE had heard two versions: three to four weeks after the digital launch, or not before early 2027. If it had been true, players who wanted a box on the shelf would have waited past the November 19, 2026 release, while digital buyers would have played on day one.
What happened next
On February 3, the day of Take-Two's quarterly results, CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked by Variety whether physical copies would come later. "That's not the plan," he replied, as VGC and Kotaku reported. Kotaku added that it could not confirm the rumor with its own sources.
The full picture came with the pre-order announcement in June. According to Take-Two's release, the physical version goes on sale November 12, 2026, a week before launch, so buyers can pre-load. Boxed copies were not held back after all, but the physical product turned out to be a download code inside the box. The launch FAQ covers what physical copies include, and a later December disc rumor has its own post.
