GTA VI's first trailer sets three Guinness World Records

Guinness World Records has certified Rockstar's first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer as the most-viewed video game trailer on YouTube over its first 24 hours, at 90,421,491 views. The same announcement credited the video with two more records.

The three records

According to Guinness World Records, the trailer now holds:

• the most views for a video game trailer on YouTube in 24 hours (90,421,491);
• the most likes for a video game trailer on YouTube, with about 8.9 million in the first day;
• the most views for any non-music YouTube video in 24 hours. The previous holder was a MrBeast video from August 2023 that drew 59.4 million.

Push Square points out that music is a separate category: BTS's "Butter" still has the bigger 24-hour total once music videos are included. By the time Push Square published, the trailer had gone past 110 million views.

Why it matters

The records change nothing about the game itself. What they do show is the scale of the audience waiting for it, ten years after Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar posted the trailer to YouTube on December 4, 2023, and it gave players their first look at Lucia and Jason in Vice City; our Trailer 1 report covers what it confirmed. The timeline lists GTA VI's key dates in order.

A second count

In February 2024, Take-Two told investors the trailer had 93 million views in its first day and, with partner channels, "became the biggest video debut ever." That figure is Take-Two's, and it is not the Guinness count.
