Fan moon theory about a November 2024 GTA VI trailer proved wrong
Fans read the moon in a Rockstar image as a sign of GTA VI Trailer 2 on November 22, 2024. The day passed with no trailer; it came in May 2025.

Update history
Update (): November 22 came and went without a trailer. Looking back a year after Trailer 1, Kotaku noted on December 6 that Rockstar still had not shown a second one, so the moon reading was wrong.
Status changed: RumortoDebunked
In early November 2024, some GTA VI fans decided the moon held the answer to their longest-running question. The X fan account GTAVI_Countdown argued that a moon in a recent Rockstar image pointed to Trailer 2 arriving on November 22, GamesRadar+ reported, and Kotaku traced the same reading to posts on the r/GTA6 subreddit. Nobody involved claimed inside knowledge, and neither outlet pointed to any track record behind the idea. It was a reading of a picture, not a leak.
How the theory worked
The image came from a November 1 Rockstar post about a GTA Online update planned for December, Kotaku explained. It showed a night scene with a waning gibbous moon, and fans matched that phase to a date on the real calendar. Hopes ranged from a full trailer to a release date or just a teaser.
Believers cited 2023 as proof. A Rockstar image from that September also showed a waning moon, and fans linked it to December 1, the day Rockstar set the date for Trailer 1. GamesRadar+ was not persuaded: the moon took that shape many times between those two dates.
What it meant for players
None of it was official, and neither outlet carried any comment from Rockstar. At the time, the only public plan was a fall 2025 release. By mid-November, Kotaku said, the theory had grown from a fringe idea into the main talking point among fans, a sign of how long the wait since Trailer 1 had started to feel.
What happened
