Update history
Update (): A few hours after Bloomberg's report, Rockstar posted a message from co-founder Sam Houser saying the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would come in early December.
Status changed: ReportedtoConfirmed
Rockstar Games said on November 8, 2023 that the first trailer for its next Grand Theft Auto would arrive in early December. The message, from co-founder Sam Houser, came a few hours after a Bloomberg report had said much the same.
Earlier that day, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier had reported that Rockstar Games was close to announcing its next Grand Theft Auto, perhaps before the week was out, and that a first trailer would follow in December. The report, summarized by VGC, rested on people familiar with Rockstar's plans. Rockstar had not confirmed any of it when the story appeared.
What Bloomberg reported
According to VGC's account, the report made three points:
- Rockstar planned to announce the game soon, possibly within days.
- The first trailer would arrive in December.
- That timing would line up with Rockstar's 25th anniversary.
VGC added that Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, was due to release its quarterly results later the same day. VGC said it was unclear whether the reveal would come before or after them.
What it meant for players
At this stage there was still no official name, no release window and no confirmed platform list. What the report offered was a month to watch. That was more than fans had been working with: in October, an anonymous claim of an October 26 trailer had spread on Reddit, and Kotaku treated it with skepticism. No trailer appeared that day.
The last official word from Rockstar had come in 2022, when it said only that development was underway, as Kotaku noted. Bloomberg's report carried more weight than a forum post, but it was still a report, not a statement from the studio.
Background
Rockstar was founded in 1998, so December 2023 would mark its 25th anniversary. Outlets and fans already called the game Grand Theft Auto VI, though Rockstar had not used that title itself. On timing, Kotaku had noted in October that Take-Two's financial forecasts reportedly pointed to a release by 2025.
Rockstar confirms it
Within a few hours, Rockstar confirmed the heart of the report itself. A message from co-founder Sam Houser went out on the Rockstar Newswire and, as Gematsu reported, on Rockstar's X account.
Houser opened by noting that "Next month marks the 25th anniversary of Rockstar Games," looked back on the studio's founding, and spoke about the players who had supported its games. He then said that "in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto," as quoted by VGC.
The message gave a window, not a day, and it did not use the name Grand Theft Auto VI. It did turn a report into an official plan: the first trailer was weeks away. Rockstar later named the exact day, and the timeline lists the official reveals that followed in order.
