The Verge corrects its report of Xbox-exclusive GTA VI cloud streaming after Xbox denial

The Verge reported Xbox had exclusive GTA VI cloud-streaming rights, PC included. Xbox denied both points, and the corrected report drops them.

Update history

  1. Update (): Late that day, Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball said on X that GTA VI will not stream exclusively or to PC, calling the coverage misreporting. Kotaku added his statement that night, and The Verge later corrected its report.

The Verge reported on October 6 that Xbox had secured exclusive cloud-streaming rights to Grand Theft Auto VI at launch. As Kotaku summed it up, the story rested on remarks Xbox head Asha Sharma made to employees at an internal all-hands meeting that morning, which The Verge said its sources backed up. Rockstar and Take-Two have not commented.

What was reported

  • From November 19, Xbox Cloud Gaming would be the only cloud service streaming the game.
  • Players on PC could stream it through Xbox, even though GTA VI is not launching on PC.
  • It was unclear how long the arrangement would last, so rival services might have added the game later.

The denial and the correction

The same day, Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball posted on X that the news had led to "some misreporting," adding that "the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC." He confirmed only that the Xbox version launches on November 19. Push Square notes it is unclear whether Sharma misspoke or her words were misread.

The Verge then corrected its story. According to GTA Boom, the new version drops the exclusivity and PC streaming but still says Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream the game at launch, and reporter Tom Warren wrote that the deal "appears to be more complicated than I originally reported."

What it means for players

The two headline claims are denied by Xbox and withdrawn by The Verge. We mark this as reported, not debunked, because the denial came from Microsoft rather than Rockstar or Take-Two, and the launch has not yet settled it. A PC version is still unannounced; a separate report on a PC release in early 2027 is covered on its own, and the PC release tracker lists only official statements.
