Update history

  1. Update (): Bloomberg's making-of feature on GTA VI reported that the online component is expected in 2027, according to Beebom's summary, and that Rockstar developers are not discussing it yet. A major outlet now reports the timing from its own reporting, so this post moves from rumor to reported. Rockstar has still not announced an online mode or a date.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy says Rockstar will launch multiplayer for Grand Theft Auto VI "next year." He made the claim in an interview with Bloomberg while visiting Tokyo Game Show, Dexerto reported on September 17, 2026. Clancy is not a Rockstar or Take-Two source, and neither company has announced an online mode or a date for one.

What Clancy said

Clancy explained that Twitch had "spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans." He went on to tell Bloomberg: "You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer."

In the remarks the outlets quoted, he gave no name, month or details for the mode. LevelUp noted that Rockstar had not publicly responded to his comments.

What is official

Very little. Rockstar has presented GTA VI as a single-player experience, as Beebom points out, and an online mode at launch has not been confirmed. Around the same time, Take-Two told shareholders it would keep supporting the current GTA Online after GTA VI comes out, LevelUp reported.

Bloomberg's October 14 feature on the making of GTA VI later reported, per Beebom, that the online component is expected in 2027 (see the update above). That is Bloomberg's reporting, not an announcement. Rockstar's leaders spoke on the record for the same feature, as covered in our post on the interview, but Beebom says the developers are not discussing online play yet.

For players, that means the November 19 launch should be treated as a single-player release until Rockstar says otherwise. Our online launch tracker records every official statement about the online mode as it is made.
