Rumor: Kinda Funny relays claim of no microtransactions or AI in GTA VI single-player
Kinda Funny Games claims Rob Nelson said GTA VI's single-player has no real-money purchases and no AI. Unconfirmed; the ESRB lists In-Game Purchases.

Kinda Funny Games, one of the outlets that previewed GTA VI at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, claims co-studio head Rob Nelson told it the single-player game has no real-money purchases and does not use AI. Other outlets passed the claim on second-hand: Push Square and Gfinity relayed Kinda Funny's account on August 28, the day after the Extended Look, without speaking to Nelson. Rockstar has published nothing on either point.
What was claimed
- Spending: by Kinda Funny's account, Nelson said there is no monetization in the game.
- AI: asked point blank whether the game uses AI, he reportedly said no. Both outlets present that answer as being about generative AI.
- Online: asked about the next GTA Online, Rockstar declined to comment, so both claims concern the single-player game only.
What it means for players
Until Rockstar says it, this stays a claim, and even if accurate it would not mean there is nothing to buy. The ESRB rating listing includes the In-Game Purchases notice, and Rockstar's own GTA VI site shows it beside the Mature rating. The ESRB's ratings guide uses that notice for offers to buy "digital goods or premiums with real world currency," with upgrades among its examples; neither page says which offers apply here. One paid extra is already known: Vice reported in June that players can still move up to the Ultimate Edition after release. Our age ratings post covers the full ESRB and PEGI listings.
Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA VI. The online launch tracker follows that question, and our editions page compares what each version includes.
